Spanish Land Grant Trail - Hawn State Park, New Offenburg, MO

The Spanish Land Grant Trail is a moderate 3.8-mile trail sitting on the West side of Hawn State Park. One other crew member and I worked full-time for roughly 4 months to lay down tread, build erosion mitigation features, and assisted in the construction of 2 foot bridges. We were also part of rerouting sections of the trail due to geographic obstacles and installed rock work to compensate for natural features like bogs and stream beds. While the route had been established by MO State Parks, it was up to us to perform site design as needed to construct a sustainable trail in an area with frequently changing topographic and geologic conditions within range of strictly protected microenvironments. We followed internationally recognized building standards outlined in ‘Lightly on the Land’. This trail was built while working for The Student Conservation Association under contract from Missouri State Parks and funded by The Sierra Club of St. Louis. Work was supported in part by The Friends of Hawn Association. The very same that I am now the Vice President of.
